138 million people go to religious services a week in the US. (40% of the population)
for 2-3 hours these people pray (think really hard at god) and listen to some other folks say “how awesome god is in helping others”.
2 times 138 million equals 276 million. That’s the minimum amount of community service (actual active helping of your neighbor) that is currently being wasted celebrating the existence of a being that is allegedly ALL about helping people.
Supposedly though Christians and other religious people do great acts of charity for everyone. Problem is studies show 80% of the charity goes straight into evangelism not helping others. That’s the inherent problem of religion. It keeps saying you don’t need food, health or shelter as much as you need god in your heart. Seems that telling a starving homeless man his problems are a lack of god is a bit hypocritical when the guy saying it has that god in his heart but isn’t offering any real help. Hard to follow isn’t it? That’s how religion argues itself in circles.
Many of you do volunteer, do good work and say “I do this for god”, why? what has god done for you? Plenty of people have done things but god has done nothing.
Somehow as an atheist I’m the bad person for actually helping instead of sitting around and thinking at god that god should help.
